Mobile’s Bankhead Tunnel reopening with nightly closures for remaining work

Bankhead Tunnel closures will last overnight into next week starting on Sunday, the Alabama Department of Transportation’s Southwest Region said Saturday.

The tunnel, while reopening at 4 p.m. today, will be closed nightly from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. from Sunday to Thursday to allow crews to install lighting. ALDOT recommends people visit the ALGO app for the latest updates.

The tunnel has been closed for about a week while crews have made electrical repairs.

While the tunnel is closed, motorists are directed to take an alternative route such as the Wallace Tunnel (Interstate 10) or the Africatown Bridge.

Opened in 1941, the tunnel is named after John Hollis Bankhead, who served in both houses of the Alabama Legislature and as a U.S. Senator. He was also the grandfather of Hollywood legend Tallulah Bankhead.
